The prevalence of recurrent epilepsy is about 0.5-1%,and slightly less than half of those affected are women.The possibility of pregnancy should be considered in any woman of childbearing age with epilepsy because treatment is likely to be necessary for a minimum of two years and maybe indefinitely.This certainly applies to any girl over the age of 15. Withdrawal of antiepileptic drugs well before a planned pregnancy should be considered because neural tube defects occur before 28 days,but if a patient requires antiepileptic drugs treatment should be continued throughout pregnancy. |
